Summer reading program continues at library

The John L. Street Library’s summer reading program, “Catch the Reading Bug,” continues today, July 23, and next Wednesday, July 30. As has been the case every week, last Wednesday found kids of a variety of ages learning and talking about the strange world of insects.

Children’s Librarian Tammy Sholar said that about 30 kids showed up to the morning session on July 16, but there were only 11 kids and three mothers at that afternoon’s session when The Cadiz Record stopped by. Still, the children were lively enough that any more might have been tough to handle anyway.

After watching a short video about bugs, Sholar asked the children, ranging from ages one to 11, if they had any bug stories. Did they ever.

A couple of the boys talked about being stung by wasps. Five-year-old Bethany Illig said she once made the mistake of walking through a clover patch without her shoes and stepped on a bee.

“It stung me right on the baby toe,” Illig said frowning.

Illig’s mother, Christina, said that when her husband was stationed with the military in Kosovo, he was told not to eat bugs.

“Why would someone eat a bug in Kosovo?” asked nine-year-old Ezekiel Reyes.
