The Special Olympics Road Show will be appearing in Cadiz at the John L. Street Library on Aug. 25 at 6 p.m.

Mary Dee Boemker, Kentucky’s Special Olympics Field Services Director, said that the purpose of the “road show” was to sign up athletes and volunteers.

“We’re trying to get the word out about it to eligible athletes,” Boemker said. “They can see what we offer and whether or not they are eligible. We’re also hoping to get a few volunteers for coaches.”

Boemker said that the program could use a lot of new volunteers. She said that coaches would need to make at least a weekly commitment, and that they needed to have some knowledge of the sport for which they are coaching. They would be asked to teach the children basics, such as a sport’s etiquette and rules.

Boemker said that Area 1, which is based in Paducah and includes Trigg County, offers about 15 sports right now, which compete at different times of the year. This includes bowling, equestrian sports, snow skiing, track and field and basketball. She said that cheerleading was not yet an official Special Olympics activity, but that she was working to get it approved.
