The Gateway Garden Club met on November 12, 2008, at the John L. Street Library in Cadiz. Vice-President, Maxine Corbey, presided over the business meeting. Barbara Larson presented the Program topic;, “Attracting the Birds.” Members and guests learned that there are simple things to do to attract many types of birds to your yard. Birds, like all living things require food, water, and shelter. The easiest step is to put up feeders and keep them full. Next, add a constant water source for both drinking and bathing. Shelter can be provided by various heights of trees, shrubs, and other plants.

Different birds have different tastes. By providing feed seeds, suet, fruit, and berry plants, you will attract a variety of birds throughout the year. Providing water can be as simple as a birdbath or as industrious as ponds and bogs. Ponds will also attract dragonflies and other insects that birds will eat. Some birds also prefer to dine on frogs and bats.
