Tourist Commison to fund cost of Wier Art Exhibit
by Vyron Mitchell, The Cadiz Record Editor Email Vyron
The funds will be directed to the shipping and insurance needed to assure safe arrival in Cadiz and return to the Wier family in Chicago, Illinois. The 24 pieces of art will be on display for the first time outside the home of Dick and Pat Wier. In a letter of request from the museum Paul Fourshee says the exhibit is "probably the first exhibit that we can expect to draw visitors from major cities." The letter requested $5,000 to pay the insurance and freight. "This would be a great opportunity for the community," said tourism board chairman Alan Watts as he voiced support of the contribution. "This is something we need to get behind." Other board members agreed and those present voted unanimously to give the support. Watts said the exhibit would not only be advertised in the local area, but noted the Kentucky Arts Council has indicated it would give the exhibit statewide coverage. The exhibit will be on loan to the Cadiz museum and with the contribution to the event, tourism board members indicated they would have their name attached as a co-sponsor of the event. "There's no way we could get that kind of advertising for $5,000," said board member Carla White. "It's going to change the image of Trigg County." Board members said they could justify the expenditure because it would be directly related to the tourism industry. Watts noted the exhibit would expand the image of Cadiz with the opening timed for the county's annual Trigg County Country Ham Festival. Prior to the vote, Kenneth Guinn suggested the board consider changing its policy in making donations. He said the board should request a balance sheet from any organization that may request funds in the future. "I'm all for this (exhibit) but I just think it would be sound judgement to ask for a balance sheet in the future." "When word gets out we are making this contribution," he said, "I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get requests from other organizations." The board is expected to take up that question at its regular meeting.
