Wier exhibit heading to JMAM
by Vyron Mitchell, The Cadiz Record Editor Email Vyron
The exhibit, owned by Dick and Pat Wier of Chicago, is a collection of 2oth century contemporary art and will be on display in Cadiz beginning October 4. The display will be open until the Friday after Thanksgiving Lisowsky said. According to Lisowsky the Wiers have been collecting art for a number of years and have put together a collection of some of the most recognized and sought after artists in this country. Purchased by the Wiers from museums and at auctions, the display will be the first public viewing of the prints since becoming a part of the Wier private collection. "The collection will have some of the 20th centuries most important contemporary artists," according to Lisowsky. It is so important, she noted that when the Kentucky Arts Council learned of the exhibit they agreed to help with advertising the exhibit around the state and include the information in their brochures. Included in the exhibit will be one textile, one sculptor and 21 works on paper. All are original pieces of work by such artists as Chuck Close, Jasper Johns, and Frank Stella. Although the names may not be household names in far Western Kentucky, in the art world, they are at the top of various art mediums including American Pop, Photorealist, Abstract Expressionist, and Contemporary Portraits. American born Stella was awarded the Skowhegan medal of Painting in 1981 and he has two honorary degrees, one from Princeton University and the other from Dartmouth. He has also given a series of lectures at Harvard and received the Award of American Art from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1985. He currently has works on display at art galleries in the Museum of Modern Art in New York as well as the Bernard Jacobson Gallery in London. Lisowsky said she expects visitors from not only Kentucky but also the other areas of the Mid-South. At the present time Janice Mason is working plans to notify all colleges in the area including those in Tennessee. "Art students just can't miss this one," Lisowsky beamed. "This will be a golden opportunity for those who appreciate art in this entire region." While the art is on display, the museum plans - for the first time - to request a $3.00 donation from visitors. The donation will not be asked of any students visiting the museum and work has already begun to notify area elementary and high school class of the exhibit. The exhibit is coming to Cadiz because "someone was in the right place at the right time" Lisowsky explained. "We have a board member who has a friend who lives in Chicago and knows the Wiers," she noted. When the Wiers mentioned to their friend in Chicago of their plans to temporarily store their collection, that set in motion a few telephone calls and an agreement was reached to display the works in Cadiz until the latter part of November. "This is only about half of their collection," Lisowsky explained. "They offered their entire collection, but we just didn't have enough room." She said the Wiers, along with a number of their friends and fellow art collectors, are expected to be in Cadiz for the October 4 opening. The display also will available for public viewing during this year's Trigg County Country Ham Festival.
