Santa Claus headlining Christmas parade
by Tom Berry, The Cadiz Record EmailTom
The energetic elves already working for the Cadiz -Trigg County Chamber of Commerce and the Cadiz Renaissance on Main Street Committee have scheduled the parade and other Yuletide events for Saturday, December 7. The parade will roll down Main Street at 5 p.m. Rudolph, the famous red-nosed reindeer and head of the Santa's Helpers Union, said he would make sure the Jolly Ole' Elf makes his appointment - now just a little more than 72 hours away. Festively designed floats, old-fashioned caroling, lots of hot apple cider and cocoa, sparkling sugar cookies, the aroma of pine, smiling faces, excited kids and much more will deck the streets will all the joy of Christmas for the events that are sure to bring holiday cheer to even the most incorrigible Scrooge. Speaking of Ole' Uncle Scrooge, Santa's workers on the Renaissance Committee are sponsoring "A Dickens of a Christmas" that will feature carolers from several area churches decked in Victorian-period dress. The groups will be singing at several locations in the downtown area filling the air with traditional Christmas hymns at 4 p.m. The carolers will also gather underneath the city's huge, 25-foot, brightly decorated Christmas tree at 4:45 p.m. - just before the parade - for a traditional holiday sing-along and everyone is invited to join in. For an added touch of nostalgia, those that come early will also have an opportunity to meet "Father Christmas" and his entourage while sipping on free apple cider and other refreshments that will keep you nice and warm until the parade begins. Also, Santa's gnomes at the Janice Mason Art Museum have prepared the annual "Festival of Trees" for those the want to enjoy a festive display of uniquely decorated Christmas trees. Twenty or more trees will be featured in the display that will remain on exhibit until after the holidays. Up the street and over the hill a bit, Goodwin Funeral Home is sponsoring their "Tree of Remembrance" observance from 2 p.m. until parade time at 5 p.m. at the business on Main Street. Everyone is invited to celebrate the memory of a loved one by placing an ornament on the Christmas tree in their name. A special ceremony has been scheduled for 3 p.m. and the public is invited. Pre-registration for the entry of floats in the 2002 parade is required. Floats will be judged and awarded cash prizes in four categories: small business, industry, clubs and organizations and churches. A panel of out-of-town judges will award first, second and third prizes to winners in each category. The parade lineup will begin at 3 p.m. in the parking lot behind the Trigg County schools on Lafayette Street. Chamber members will supervise the placement of floats and the judging will begin at 4 p.m. Also, The Cadiz Record will feature their first ever Christmas float this year that is sure to put an original spin on celebrating Christmas - and they won't be alone. Of course, don't forget the Third Annual "Christmas in the Park," which will feature special holiday displays along the entranceway to West Cadiz Park. The Cadiz Renaissance on Main Street Committee is now asking those that are interested in creating a display to come by City Hall or the Renaissance office to pick up entry forms and a list of rules. There is no entry fee to display a scene. "We are now in the process of determining how many organizations and individuals might be interested in participating," said Renaissance Manager Cindy Sholar. "In order to ensure that the displays are one we all can enjoy, we have certain guidelines that we believe are necessary for everyone's benefit." Some of the floats that will be featured in the Christmas parade will also be displayed at the park. To register a float - or for those that want to enter a float, but do not fit into any of the categories - call Kim Burkeen at the Chamber Tourism Bureau on Main Street at 522-3892. Sholar can be contacted at City Hall at 522-8756 while Davis can be contacted during museum hours at 522-9056.
