A Christmas parade to remember
by Tom Berry, The Cadiz Record EmailTom
It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the city Saturday night as hundreds of Cadiz-Trigg County's Yule-happy, Santa lovers began lining Main Street at least an hour before parade time in great expectation of the event. Until the first "Jingle Bells" came ringing down Main Street, many enjoyed enjoy sipping on hot drinks and munching on sparkling Christmas sugar cookies as carolers from many area churches gathered on street corners to sing "Joy to the World" and other traditional Christmas favorites. Just before the parade, the city's 25 foot - oops, make that 36-foot - tree was lit up to spread Christmas cheer throughout the season. Like a page right out of Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carole" Mayor Lyn "Ebenezer Scrooge?" Bailey, David "Father Christmas" Shore, Teresa "Mother Christmas" Bailey, Leida Underhill, Paul Fourshee, Paula Lisowsky, Sabina Bugg, Cindy Sholar, Jackie Roberts and Mary Lou Broughton decked out in Victorian costume for " A Dickens of a Christmas" sponsored by the Cadiz Renaissance on Main Street Committee. Some of the kids didn't quite know how to react to "Father Christmas," a Victorian style Santa Claus impersonated by David Shore, as he made his way up and down Main Street greeting children and handing out goodwill along with a handful of candy. "I guess they've never seen a Santa Claus like this before," Shore said. As floats featuring giant Christmas mice, long-eared elves, and what-not began rolling down Main Street, kids shouted out their Christmas wishes as Santa appeared atop a bright, Christmas-red Cadiz Fire Department pump truck. Many were scrambling for candy thrown to the streets by the Jolly Ole' Elf. "Mommy, mommy it's Santa Claus," screamed one little tyke that had to be held back before she wound up climbing onto Santa's truck. Meanwhile, the Janice Mason Art Museum's "Festival of Trees" exhibit kicked off for the Christmas season with 22 specially decorated trees on display. Following the parade, a childrens' choir from New Light Baptist Church entertained dozens of museum patrons with their musical version of the Nativity. Several of the more than 40 floats were awarded prizes in a competition sponsored and judged by the Cadiz Trigg County Chamber of Commerce - sponsors of the parade. By category the winners include: o The Cadiz Rotary Club, Relay for Life and Compassionate Friends who won first, second and third place respectively in the Clubs and Organizations Division. o Lake Barkley State Resort Park, Lake Barkley Christian Academy, and Heritage Bank took first, second and third place honors in the Small Business Category. o Industry Division winners American National Rubber and Johnson Controls that won first and second places. They were the only entries in the category. o Oak Grove Baptist, Cadiz United Methodist and Donaldson Creek Baptist churches won first second and third place awards among seven entries in the category for churches. All were awarded cash prizes. Jerry Farris, who had been previously awarded the Chamber's "Citizen of the Year" Award served as grand marshal of the parade. Surprisingly, Santa Claus - just back from a vacation to the tropical Virgin Islands - also rode The Cadiz Record's first ever Christmas float. The entry didn't win a prize, but provided a unique take on the Christmas season from a tropical point of view hailing the newspaper's 123-year history. Of course, there's good news for those that want to make sure Santa gets their requests before Christmas morning, The red-nosed, Jolly Ole' Elf himself will be available at "Santa's House" in the parking lot across the street from the Janice Mason Art Museum each Sunday afternoon until Christmas from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. The magical, mystical egg nog sipping folk of the Cadiz Rotary Club invite all of Trigg County's most holiday spirited kids - yes, adults too - to come by and say hello to Santa and bring your Christmas wish list with you.
