The Janice Mason Art Museum was recently awarded a one-year $5,000 grant through the Kentucky Arts Council as part of a new program to increase community involvement. There were 16 nonprofit arts organizations in Kentucky receiving the awards, totaling $80,000 in grants.

The Kentucky Arts Council, working with the Wallace-Readers' Digest Funds, divided the monies between the large and small organizations as an incentive to take part in the "State Arts Partnership for Cultural Participation (START) initiative in 2001 to help state arts agencies establish audience-centered funding standards, practices and program strategies to broaden, deepen and diversify cultural participation," according to an article released by the Arts Council.

"The (Janice Mason) Art Museum will be using the grant to increase community participation, specifically to target people over the age of 40," commented JMAM Board President Paula Lisowsky. "With the grant money we will be able to offer more classes that will be of interest to the entire community."

A grant request written by Dr. Martha Davis, JMAM Administrator, and Portia Ezell, member of the Board of Directors, and sent to the Kentucky Arts Council stated that the "Cadiz Community Arts Center seeks a grant in order to increase community involvement by providing the chance to experience art first-hand in a target group of people over 40."

The request also mentioned that a limited number of scholarships could also be offered in order to expand classes and community involvement and would lead to representatives from the museum traveling to local organizations distributing questionnaires and information to pique interest.

"We are very excited about the grant and the opportunity to add more to the museum," Lisowsky added. "This grant will give us a better chance of reaching our goals and continue supporting our community."
