Roberts to exhibit art, cartoons at JMAM

Throughout his career as a commercial artist, Roberts has worked as an art director, designer, illustrator and cartoonist. He spent twenty years as a freelance illustrator and cartoonist in California; however his work has taken him throughout the United States and to Europe and Australia as he worked for many of the country's largest companies. He continues to produce "Everybody's Business," a syndicated comic strip by Copley News. Roberts made many trips back to his roots in Trigg County over the years. " Friends and relatives would always ask me on my trips back home if I was still drawing pictures," he said. In 1995, Roberts and his wife, Sandy, moved from California back to Trigg County. His two children and four grandchildren soon followed. And, yes, he's still drawing pictures. "I have always enjoyed painting and drawing for myself," Roberts said. "This has always been a break from the commercial work. One big reason for moving back to Kentucky was to be able to spend more time painting and less [time] doing work for others." Roberts' exhibit is the result of that extra time painting for himself. " I think most of the artwork shows a definite Trigg County influence," he said. "Of course, there are some southern California influences as well. One cannot live for twenty years in an area without picking up a few things. I think there is a little something for everyone in my presentation." Roberts' exhibit will include drawings, paintings and collage quilt blocks. Roberts was born in Trigg County, the son of Malcolm R. Roberts and Ruby Pearl Braboy Roberts. He is the grandson of Walter and Lillian Roberts and R.T. and Laura Braboy, all from Trigg County. He still has many relatives living in Trigg County and throughout western Kentucky. He was educated in Michigan, having earned a degree in Studio Arts from Michigan State University. The museum's gift shop will also have original Christmas cards by the artist for sale throughout the exhibit. Museum members will receive a 10 per cent discount. Although the museum will open this exhibit to the public on February 3, there will be a members and invited guest only reception for the artist on Friday, February 7 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The museum is located at 71 Main Street, Cadiz. Exhibit hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The museum is closed on Wednesdays. Partial funding has been provided by the Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Education, Arts and Humanities Cabinet with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
