JMAM offering new classes for summer days

by The Cadiz Record Email News

To register for any of the classes, call the Janice Mason Art Museum at 270-522-9056 at least a week prior to the class opening.

Summer is quickly approaching and the Janice Mason Art Museum has some exciting new classes to be offered this summer.

June 2 the Museum will feature a new class with Lisa Houha as the instructor. Lisa comes to the Janice Mason Art Museum with a rich background of education and experiences as an artist. She has a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Kansas State University. This Trigg County resident has a regional and national exhibition record as a mixed media artist. She is represented by the Cumberland Gallery in Nashville, Tennessee. She is an art instructor for Hopkinsville Community College and Austin Peay State University, as well as offering private instruction for youngsters. Lisa will teach a class entitled "Mixed Media Collage" at the Museum.

As collage/mixed media work tends to include non-traditional art materials. Students will be able to use materials with personal significance and will learn to incorporate new materials into more traditional work. Participants do not need to have any prior artistic experience to enroll in this class. The class will meet on Mondays beginning June 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M., for six class sessions on consecutive Monday evenings. The fee for the class is $50.00 for members and $60.00 for non members. Supplies for the class will be furnished.

Beginning June 10, Paula Lisowsky will offer a class entitled "Drawing Exploration". This class is a second level class and is for people that have taken a previous drawing class or have confidence in their drawing skills. In "Drawing Exploration" students will further explore line quality, values, and different materials. While the first level drawing class may have seemed somewhat tedious to left brained participants, this class will not be as representational and will have a more open style. The class fee will be $50.00 for museum members and $60.00 for non-members. All materials and supplies are furnished. The class will meet each Tuesday night beginning June 10 for six sessions which are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the basement of the Janice Mason Art Museum. If you are interested in this class call the Museum prior to June 10. The class limit is 12 participants.

On Thursday, June 19th the Museum will offer a unique workshop on " Basket Weaving" by Marsha Sanson of Russelville, Kentucky. In this workshop participants will learn the basket weaving process and weave a napkin basket of their own. There will be two different time offerings for this activity on the same day, 9:00-11:30 A.M. or 1:00-3:30 P.M. Select your preferred time. The fee for the class is $50.00 for members and $55.00 for non-members. All supplies and materials are furnished.

Saturday, June 28 the Museum will feature a special one day workshop on "Using the Sewing Machine to Create a Picture Through Thread Painting and Free Motion Embroidery". Free-motion thread painting utilizes the delicate straight-stitch, disengaged feed dogs, and loosened thread tension to accomplish a basic artful skill. Participants will learn to do painted flowers, satin, blending and dense stippling. The Museum is most fortunate in having Jeanie Sexton, the talented international designer, author, fiber artist and instructor of fiber arts by machine, to teach this workshop. The class will meet from 9:00 until 3:30 at the meeting room of the Trigg County Extension Office. Bring a sack lunch for the break. Participants will need to bring their own sewing machine. It does not have to be a fancy machine, but the machine should be clean and well oiled, with a zigzag stitch and the feed dogs can be disengaged. Bring along the manual and an extension table if you have one. The table is excellent to stabilize the embroidery hoop. A $30.00 kit of materials will be provided and the student will need to secure their own free-motion embroidery foot, a 8" or 10" machine embroidery hoop, a water soluble pen, and a brown fine tip permanent pigma pen. The fee for the class is $50.00 for Museum members and $60.00 for non-members. This includes the $30.00 kit of materials. The class is open for all levels of sewers.

Karen Mize Harper, a native of Trigg County and portrait artist, will present a new and different " Portrait and Caricature Drawing Class" beginning on Thursday, July 24, at 6:30 to 8:30 at the Museum. The class will have six class sessions which will meet on consecutive Thursday nights. All levels of drawing ability are welcome. The fee for the class is $50.00 for Museum members and $60.00 for nonmembers. All supplies are furnished.

To register for any of the above classes, call the Janice Mason Art Museum at 270-522-9056 at least a week prior to the class opening. Class fees are to be paid prior to the first class meeting. If any class does not have enough participants to warrant conducting the class, it will be cancelled and participants will be notified and prepayment returned.

Partial funding has been provided by the Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Education Arts and Humanities Cabinet, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
