Johnetta Brooks, of Cadiz, and Carole Smith, of Munster, Ind., enjoy browsing through the Janice Mason Art Museum's newest exhibit "Threads by Jeannie." The exhibit - which displays the sewing work of Kuttawa artist Jeannie Sexton - kicked off on Friday. The exhibit features wall hangings, hats, jackets and other garments in a variety of designs, colors and themes that are also for sale.

"Thread Art by Jeanie" opened at the Janice Mason Art Museum June 20. This fiber exhibit is an eclectic collection of unique runway fashions and wall art by local artist Jeanie Sexton.

Sexton is an international designer, author, fiber artist and instructor of fiber arts by machine. She creates commissioned contemporary wall art and high fashion clothing. She is a juried member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and Sheltowee Artisans in the fiber arts category; Fairfield and American Quilter's Society Fashion Show designer; and is on the John C. Campbell Folk School Teaching Staff. She recently spent a week in Nagoya, Japan teaching her "Silk Ribbons by Machine" at the first Brother University, in conjunction with the World Quilt Festival.

A retired state employee, Sexton now enjoys fiber art full time. She conducts retreats, traveling seminars, lectures, demos, and trunk and slide shows.

"I feel that every day is school. A person does not necessarily need formal education in a field to be accomplished in that field," said Sexton. "Knowledge from experience, and love of the medium make for a more satisfied and productive artist. I love to share techniques with new stitchers as well as instructors. I call it "Share and Tell" rather than "Show and Tell" because I am so grateful when God allows my mind to wander and create new techniques."

"We had a small sample of Jeanie's work during the Kentucky Guild show last fall," remarked JMAM Board President Paula Lisowsky, "That really piqued our interest in her work, and we can't wait to see more."

Through its award of START grant funding, the Museum will also bring Jeanie Sexton to Cadiz as an instructor. "Using the Sewing Machine to Create Thread Painting and Free Motion Embroidery" is a one-day workshop scheduled for June 28 at 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Trigg County Extension Office meeting room. Fee for the class is $50 for museum members and $60 for non-members. This includes a kit of materials, participants will need to furnish some items. This class will fill quickly, so call the Museum early to reserve your space and get the supply list.

"Thread Art by Jeanie" will be on display from June 20 through August 3. Museum hours are Monday-Saturday, 10a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call (270) 522-9056.

Partial funding has been provided by the Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Education, Arts and Humanities Cabinet with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
