The Janice Mason Art Museum is exhibiting works of art by two talented women, Margaret Coon Harper and Karen Mize Harper. The exhibit will focus on recent black and white fine arts photography by Margaret and original oil portraits by Karen. Margaret and Karen are Trigg County natives, related as niece and aunt. Both artists approach life with a sense of adventure and exploration that is evident in their work.

Margaret began her formal studies in photography at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and earned an Associate Degree there. While studying at FIT she also worked as an assistant for a fashion and entertainment industry photographer. She is continuing her studies through Murray State University, working towards earning a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree. Currently Margaret is living in Brooklyn, NY and working for Dune, a contemporary design company that develops and produces innovative interior design products. "I really appreciate the opportunity to show my work in my hometown," stated Margaret. "It is an exciting time for me, seeing my work going beyond the classroom and starting a career in a creative environment."

Karen attended the University of Kentucky as a theater and telecommunications major before moving to Dallas, Texas where she studied fashion design at El Centro College and North Texas University. Working in the Dallas fashion industry led Karen to a successful modeling and acting career in the 90's. While living in New York City and Milan, Italy, she traveled the world working in locations such as Japan, Switzerland and Africa. This past year, she completed a bachelor's degree in art and theater at Murray State University. She now resides in Calloway County where she has devoted herself to artistic pursuits that include fiber art, weaving and oil portraiture. "Unforeseen events led me to doing oil portraiture," noted Karen, "and now the joy it brings to others is very fulfilling for me."

An artist reception is scheduled for Saturday, September 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. You can view both artists' work from August 25 until September 28. The Janice Mason Art Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
