Hundreds of Christmas happy Trigg County residents flocked around Main Street Saturday night to see Santa Claus and his 40-float entourage roll down Main Street during the annual Christmas Parade Saturday night.

Christmas traditions from around the world were noted by local business, churches, and other organizations in a colorful "Christmas Around the World" theme.

Before the event even got started, Cadiz Renaissance Committee members stirred up the "ghost of Christmas Past" by walking the streets in Victorian Era costume as part of a "Dickens of a Christmas."

City Councilman Jim Ricks - all decked out as Father Christmas for the occasion - said he was impressed with the crowd attracted by the holiday event.

"I think we've had a good turnout," Ricks said.

Meanwhile, Mother Christmas - portrayed in snowy white attire and hat for the occasion by Teresa Bailey - made a lot of kids happy while passing around candy canes.

Hot Apple Cider, hot chocolate, Christmas cookies and other refreshments provided by at least three organizations were very popular with the crowd that wanted to keep their hands warm waiting for Santa Claus to come sleighing down the street. Most patrons didn't seem to mind the cool weather - the excitement of the parade seemed to keep everyone looking up the hill on Main Street to see the Jolly Ole' Elf's reindeer team.

People in cars or on foot lined the streets from the area of Save-On Drugs to the intersection of Main Street- Kentucky 139 intersection.

Meanwhile, many sought refuge from the cold wind to take a look at some of the beauty of the Janice Mason Art Museum's "Festival of Trees" exhibit.

Betty Patterson, a Hopkinsville visitor, said she was very impressed with the trees decorated in holiday colors.

"They're really beautiful. It was worth the trip just to see this," she said.

Although all the floats entered into the parade were impressive, some of the entries stood out. Winners of the parade float competition in four categories include:

o Clubs and organizations: Helping Hands, first place; Trigg-Lyon Fire Department, second place, and the Cadiz Rotary Club, third place.

o Small business: Lake Barkley Christian Academy, first place; Lake Barkley State Resort Park, second place, and the Bank of Cadiz & Trust, third place.

o Industrial division: Johnson Controls, first place; American National Rubber, second place, and the Kentucky Transportation Department, third place.

o Church division; Locust Grove Baptist Church, first place; Oak Grove Baptist Church, second place, and Cadiz United Methodist Church, third place.

The entire parade brought smiles and excitement to young and old alike, but it was what came at the end of the parade that made little Johnny Nichols jump for joy.

"Here comes Santa Claus," he shouted as he jumped and waved. "Santa Claus, Santa Claus."
