Japanese woodblock art on display

Janet Mason Art Museum Board of Directors President Paula Lisowski explained that Holeman was in Japan after World War II working for the department of the Navy as a civilian teacher.

A reception was held March 27 to mark the beginning of a Japanese Woodblock art display at the Janet Mason Art Museum, and more than 50 traditional woodblock prints will be featured through April 22.

An actual hand-carved woodblock is included in the display.

The collection, which is on loan from the Dawson Springs Museum and Art Center, is a portion of a collection donated by Claude Holeman of Dawson Springs. Holeman collected more than 750 woodblock prints during his 36-year stay in Japan.

Janet Mason Art Museum Board of Directors President Paula Lisowski explained that Holeman was in Japan after World War II working for the department of the Navy as a civilian teacher. And, although he could not afford to ship all 750 prints back to America, he managed to bring his favorites home to America.

The prints in this exhibit are generally arranged to show the development of the art form. Additionally, one section is devoted to foreign influence and another displays the story of Ronin.
