DRAFFENVILLE – Jackie Sholar estimates it’s been at least 20 years since Trigg County defeated Christian County twice in one baseball season. Last Tuesday, the Wildcats started the count again with a 4-1 victory over the Colonels.

The win preceded a 3-1 loss at Union County on Saturday and a 16-0 shellacking of Dawson Springs on Monday, Trigg’s Senior Night. The six Wildcat seniors are Shane Banks, Donald Bush, Josh Green, Jordan P’Pool, Will Stagner and Tyler Thomas.

“The guys were ready to play tonight and had a good game,” Sholar said. “It was a good game for the seniors.”

Last Tuesday, the Wildcats held the Colonels off the board until the seventh and had a 4-0 lead by then after a two-run single by Hunter Smillie and RBIs by Alex Sadler and Jarrod Stallons.

Stagner pitched a complete game, allowing no earned runs and striking out seven.

Trigg scored in the first inning Saturday at Union County and held that 1-0 lead until Union County scored three times in the sixth.

Trigg was scheduled to play Tuesday against Muhlenberg South (results unavailable at press time.

The Wildcats host Madisonville-North Hopkins on Thursday, play at Russelville on Friday and host University Heights on Saturday.

Sholar said a week free of rain would help Trigg heading into next week’s 5th District Tournament.

“The last couple of weeks have been tough,” Sholar said. “We need to have these games. We’re still not hitting the ball the way we were before this weather.”

Trigg hosts this year’s district tournament and plays Monday against Lyon County.

“Donald, Will and Shane will each get a start [pitching] this week, but probably not more than four or five innings each,” Sholar said. “Getting them ready to go heading into district is the main thing right now. Our defense has been pretty good.”
