Has there been a year like this in baseball where so many different milestones have been reached by so many different legends? I think not. We’ve seen Craig Biggio eclipse 3,000 hits. Sammy Sosa passed 600 home runs. “The Big Hurt” Frank Thomas knocked past 500 homeruns (and there are 3 more players who could get their 500th this year). Roger Clemens grabbed his 350th win and Greg Maddox could do the same before the year is done. Tom Glavine will leap a few past 300 wins by the end of the year. By the way, Trevor Hoffman recorded his 500th save a few weeks ago. No one has ever saved 500 games before, he had already broken the record of 478 career saves.

Seven pitchers 40 years old or older pitched on the very same day in late June. And the granddaddy of all milestone record breakers, Barry Bonds, is poised to break the most coveted record in all of professional sports, Henry Aaron’s career home run record.

The only year that comes to mind that revived the game such as this one is 1998 when Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire intrigued the world with their home run chase, seemingly hitting a home run every single day.
