High school engineering teacher Lori Ricks’ class went to the Lake Barkley State Resort Park Activity Center last week to answer one question — would their cardboard canoes sink or swim?

As one might expect, a couple of the cardboard creations immediately capsized when its student-passengers attempted to push off the pool sides, dousing five days worth of construction.

Others, though, were paddled by their captains across the pool and back, initially taking on surprisingly little water. Eventually, though, the amount of splashing students took their toll, and even the best-made cardboard canoes were undone by the onslaught of water.
