CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University’s football team filled needs with 10 players signed to National Letter of Intents, Wednesday, the first day of the winter signing period.

The Governors signed five offensive players, including three linemen, and four defensive players, including two defensive backs, as part of the 2009 class. In addition, the Govs also signed a highly decorated kicker.

Austin Peay signed offensive linemen Preston Frye (6-6, 310, Piney Flatts, Tenn./Sullivan HS), Vincent Johnson (6-7, 285, Knoxville, Tenn./Fulton HS) and Jacob Langston (6-5, 290, Hopkinsville/Christian County HS). In addition, on offense they signed a pair of wide receivers, Ashton Adams (6-5, 215, Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns Bennett HS) and Devin Stark (6-3, 180, Memphis/Farley).

Defensively, the Governors signed two defensive backs, Jeremy Ross (6-0, 175, College Park, Ga./North Clayton HS) and Darrick Dillard (6-1, 185, Hopkinsville/ Hopkinsville HS) along with a linebacker, Zach Lane (6-2, 210, Clarksville, Tenn./ Clarksville HS) and a defensive end Preston Gilbreath (6-5, 247, Mt. Pleasant, Tenn./Mt. Pleasant HS). The latter is a hearing-impaired youngster who was the Class A Mr. Football Lineman.

In addition, the Governors filled a void by signing kicker/punter Steve Stamsell (5-10, 170, Athens, Tenn./McMinn County).

“We are really excited about the kids we have signed,” APSU coach Rick Christophel said. “We filled areas of need.

“We are going to look pretty good coming off the bus. We signed three good-sized offensive linemen who have really quick feet, one thing we really put a priority on. It provides us with much-needed depth on our offensive line. I just hope they come in and work as hard as the guys we already have here.

“Both receivers we signed are very good football players, guys who can run and catch the football.
