Lt. Col. Carl Yates of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is the band’s manager. He said they are based primarily in Louisville and made up of members of the Sheriff’s Department, Louisville Metro Police, the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, the Louisville Fire Department, the Jeffersontown Police, the Jeffersontown Fire Department, the Fern Creek Fire Department and the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice. Including the crew, there are 19 members, but Yates also said that the crew is mostly the band itself.
“They are the crew,” he said. “We don’t have any roadies.”
Yates said the band, which has been together for 16 years, performs at schools and community functions all around Kentucky, although the majority of their shows are in the Louisville area. Although the band had gotten many requests since they were profiled in American Profile last October, the farthest the band has ever traveled for a show is Annapolis, Md. He said the band mostly consists of the same people who have been in it from the beginning, although their old drummer recently left to play with a gospel band. They occasionally hold auditions for new members, and look for several qualities: commitment to the program, a strong personality and, of course, talent. A few of the members play several instruments, he said.
