“I’m worried that we will get caught with no one to help in event of a major leak,” said District Superintendent Terry Goins. “Two of our men have agreed to be on call, but they expect compensation.”
Commission Chairman Terry Lee McNichols said that currently employees collect overtime pay if they voluntarily come in after hours for repairs.
“I have a problem with people who do not want to do this,” said Commissioner Stanley Brimmer. “I’d say we will have to put it to them pretty sternly. When I was in business, I set up the rules. If nobody could handle that, I would find someone else who could.”
“If we have everyone on call for one weekend a month, and they get paid to stay home, would it not help to ease their pain?” asked McNichols.
Commissioner R.C. Stallons said, “I think we will have to put some teeth into it when we talk to the employees so everyone knows they are being treated alike.”
Commissioner Scott Bridges said that the new policy would pay workers whether they worked or not, and compensate them for two hours of work performed. Personnel would clock in for all work done after hours and be paid for work performed beyond the first two hours at a rate of time-and-a-half as it extends beyond a full work week.
