“Industry sales for the trailer and body business are the lowest in many years all across the country,” said John Earles, the director of human resources, in the release. “Prevailing market conditions have left us with no choice but to take this action.”
Benson manufactures specialty trailers and bodies and has been in operation for more than 40 years, the release said. Benson’s headquarters was in Mineral Wells, but was moved to Cadiz in October 2006. Earles said that sales at the Mineral Wells facility were down considerably compared with similar time periods in 2006. The release also said that most of the production at the Mineral Wells plant would be transferred to the Cadiz plant..
The release also said that market analysts have said that the truck and tractor industry is at “the bottom of the down cycle and will see a substantial recovery by late 2008 with a strong rebound in 2009.” It did not list any specific analysts, but Sharon Wolfe, human resource manager for the Cadiz plant, said this was based on industry trade publications.
