The aftermath of last week’s storms would not deter the Blue Star Mothers from their fundraising efforts in front of two local grocery stores.

With the Integra Bank sign reading 44 degrees, Leena Johnson reported community involvement was as brisk as the weather. “I haven’t counted it up, but I am thinking we’ve collected maybe $20-$25 within the hour.”

In front of the Food Giant on Main Street, Johnson was bundled in warm coat and hat. The onset of a light, and cold mist was enough for her. “We’ve been doing alright, and people have supported our efforts, but I think I am going to cut it short this morning. It’s freezing!”

The Blue Star Mothers were founded in 1942, to provide moral support for overseas troops. Not only did their efforts include the packages and letters but volunteer work wherever they were needed.

Their fundraising strategy for the April 8, 2006 effort included selling bracelets, colored in desert camouflage schemes, with the slogan “Support our Troops” for $3 each, and accepting donations.
