The board first voted to authorize Superintendent Tim McGinnis to enter into a contract with Snider Shaping Company of Malden, Mo. to laser-grade the school system’s soccer field for $7,084. With this procedure, the company would level the field but leave a slight slope to allow for drainage. McGinnis said that when the county initially put the soccer field in place, it was not laser-graded and this has led standing pools of water, which he said was a safety hazard. Board member Sharon Simmons said water pools have also led to a larger number of mosquitoes than there might otherwise be, which she categorized as a health hazard.
McGinnis said he asked Judge-Executive Stan Humphries if the schools might be able to pay a lower rental fee after making these upgrades. McGinnis said that if the public’s use of the land increases, he might be able to negotiate the price.
Before the board took action on the first item, McGinnis also recommended that they vote to authorize him to sign a contract to transport the old sod to the Trigg County Recreation Complex baseball fields. McGinnis recommended that the board not approve one item without the other. He said he had opened two separate bids for the two separate services. When he wasn’t completely satisfied with the first bids, he asked the maintenance department to look for more but they did not receive any, he said. It will cost $14,112.50 to have Tri-Turf Farms of Paris, Tenn. remove the old sod and repair the irrigation system. This covers 101,200 square feet and repairs would consist of raising or lowering sprinkler heads. The bid price does not include the needed supplies for the repair of the sprinkler head, McGinnis said. Interim High School Principal and Director of Operations Matt Ladd said that Snider Shaping Company would do their laser-grading after Tri-Turf had completed their work and that they would also provide a guide for the day-to-day maintenance of the field.
