Preseason practice continues for the Trigg County High School girls’ basketball team. The Trigg County Lady Wildcats are busy preparing for the 2008-09 season. Trigg County Coach Amy Breckel likes what she has seen from her team thus far.

“Practice is going very well so far,” Breckel commented. “The girls are working hard and we have had good intensity at practice. We have 16 girls on the team this year and for the first time in probably six years we are going to be a guard-dominated team.”

The Injury Bug has plagued the Trigg County backcourt in recent seasons.

“Two years ago, we lost our point guard on our team to an ACL injury, that was Laykn Brooks, she is finally back with us,” Breckel confided. “Later that same year, we lost Trinity

Wortham a shooting guard on our team due to an ACL injury. Last year, we lost our point guard who took over for Laykn Brooks, that was Audrey Futrell, due to knee problems as well, although it was not an ACL injury. This year, we finally have all three of those girls returning.”

Trigg County has a deep experienced backcourt. The Lady Wildcats are a capable group of scorers and ballhandlers.

“We also have Elysia Brown who was our freshman point guard last year and who made the all district team doing it,” Breckel added. Brooke Kearney, a sophomore shooting guard, will also be returning this year. On top of that, we had a sophomore guard transfer in from Christian County and that is Ashleigh Matlock who will be trying to earn playing time. I am very happy to have all of these girls back to help us take care of the basketball.”

Brown was a proven scorer for Trigg County last season. In 26 games, Brown scored 253 points. She was also the team’s field goal percentage leader.

Trigg County girls’ basketball team has preseason practices scheduled throughout the week.
