Butts was an all-region performer in 2007 and All-State honorable mention. A two-year captain, she also was chosen Academic All-State in 2007. Butts served as Calloway County’s leadoff hitter as a sophomore and junior, batting .341 in 2007 with a .395 on-base percentage while leading the team in stolen bases. She is hitting .300 so far in this rain-plagued 2008 season.
“Sam is a very good athlete,” APSU coach Jim Perrin said. “She is a high school shortstop but she can play short, second third or possibly even the outfield. She certainly is going to provide depth at those positions and challenge for playing time early on.
“Offensively, she is a gap-type hitter.
“But what I really like about her is the intensity she brings to the field. She has a lot of fire, really has a great desire to win.”
Last summer she played on the same summer softball team as previous Lady Govs signee, Shelby Norton, a catcher from Madison, Ala.
Butts lives in Cadiz but transferred as a freshman to Calloway County to play softball and basketball, where she was the starting point guard, leading the team in assists and three-point shooting the last two years for that successful program.
