Caldwell County pulls away from Lady 'Cats for 58-36 win

A scoreless first quarter spelled doom for the Lady Wildcats, who dropped a 58-36 district contest Monday night at Wildcat Gym.

Neither team got out of the gate fast, but Caldwell did manage to outscore Trigg 11-0 in the first quarter.

The Lady Wildcats were bothered by Caldwell’s man-to-man defense, which forced Trigg into 11 turnovers and 11 missed shots in the first quarter.

Caldwell County extended their lead to 25-10 at halftime, but Trigg nibbled away in the third quarter and pulled to within 28-17 on a Felicia Crenshaw bucket with 5:54 left.

The Lady Tigers managed to break Trigg’s pressure defense the rest of the quarter and led 44-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

Trigg County missed 17 of 20 field goal attempts in the first half, but improved slightly to 36-percent in the second half. For the game, they hit just 12-of-45 for 27-percent.

Caldwell County shot 38-percent from the field, but nailed 16-of-22 free throws (72-percent). Trigg hit 10-of-19 (53-percent) from the line.

Laquisha Boyd led the Lady Wildcats with 14 points and eight rebounds.

Molly Walters scored nine points and Crenshaw, who sat out most of the first half in foul trouble, added eight points.

Amanda Cortner led Caldwell with 17 points and ten rebounds, while Bristyn Prowell added 12. Melly Heaton scored 11.

Caldwell outrebounded Trigg 34-28 and scored 23 points off 22 Trigg turnovers.

Caldwell County improved to 7-6 with their third straight win and 5-1 in district play.

Trigg County fell to 4-7 overall and 0-5 in the fifth District.

Trigg County will return to action Friday night at Wildcat Gym against Lyon County.

Caldwell County also won the J.V. game 32-21. Audrey Futrell led Trigg County with seven points, while Brooke Allen and Hailey Oliver each scored four points.
