The Trigg County Democratic Party Executive Committee announced James E. Hughes would run for the balance of the unexpired term of office as jailer. Eddie Harper, who lost his bid for office in the 2006 primary, announced his intention to run as a write-in candidate.

County Clerk Wanda Thomas said that Regina Wilkerson-Jasper filed papers to run for the unexpired term of one city council seat. The seat appears on the ballot due to the de-annexation of Councilwoman Donna McNichols’ home. The Cadiz City Council selected McNichols as her own interim replacement after she moved to a home within incorporated city limits. The incumbent McNichols seeks to retain her seat against the challenge of Wilkerson-Jasper, who finished seventh in last year’s council election for six seats.

The jailer’s position opened with the retirement of Glenn Cunningham on August 1. Both major parties had an opportunity to select one candidate to run under their banner. Republican Party officials selected former Cadiz Police Officer Roger Knight for the post. Independent and third party candidates needed a petition of 100 signatures to appear on the ballot by 4 p.m. August 14. Without the petition or nomination by their respective parties, candidates such as Harper must run as write-in candidates.

Thomas said that write-ins must declare their intention to run as a write-in and pay a fee of $50 for any write-in votes to be counted.

Hughes said that he spent 40 years as the store manager of Washer’s IGA. “It’s given me experience dealing with funds, budgets and with personnel which helps with the deputy jailers.”

He added that he spent two years in the United States Army, as an honor guard in Washington D.C. The inauguration of President Richard M. Nixon and funeral President Dwight D. Eisenhower stood out in his mind as memorable duties during his time in uniform.
