City rejects idea of sharing cost with county

The Cadiz City Council unanimously voted last week to reject the county’s proposal for sharing the financial responsibilities of hiring an animal control officer.

Immediately after Mayor Lyn Bailey asked if the council had looked over the county’s proposed agreement, Council member Frankie Phillips said, “I have looked over this agreement, and I make a motion that we don’t accept this.”

“I second that,” member Susan Bryant said quickly. The other council members then voiced their approval by voting “Aye.” Member Manuel Brown said that city residents he had talked to felt that signing on for the agreement would have amounted to paying additional county taxes.

The agreement stated that the county would have paid the officer’s salary and expenses, and the city would have reimbursed 50 percent of these expenses four times a year. The county would have been responsible for shelter expenses with the Christian County Animal Shelter.

The council also approved the second reading of an ordinance for new occupational license tax rates. The only major change under the new ordinance is that the maximum amount that professional businesses pay will be lowered to $2,500 from $3,750.50. Businesses will be categorized as wholesale, retail or professional, and all will pay a percentage of their annual gross receipts. The minimum amount to be paid to the city will be $50. Wholesale businesses will pay 0.5 percent of their gross receipts and the maximum charge will be $625. Retail businesses will pay the city one percent of their gross receipts, with the maximum charge being $1,250. Professional businesses will pay three percent of their gross receipts.
