Funeral services for Clarence Woodrow Herndon, Sr., 88, of Murray, formerly of Trigg County, were conducted on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at 1 p.m., at J.H. Churchill Funeral Home in Murray.

Dr. Bill Whittaker and Rev. Terry Garvin officiated at the services. Burial followed in the Murray City Cemetery.

Mr. Herndon died on Sunday, May 14, 2006, at 4:30 a.m., at Murray-Calloway County Hospital.

Mr. Herndon was born on September 2, 1917, in Trigg County. He was the son of the late Seldon Smith and Jessie Gower Herndon.

Mr. Herndon was retired from Union Carbide in Paducah after 29 years. He was a former teacher at MSU in the Electronics and Electricity Department; was a member of the First Baptist Church in Murray, where he served as a past Sunday School teacher for the teenage boys class; was a graduate of Hazel High School Class of 1936; earned his BS from MSU in Math and Physics; did post graduate work; and at the time of his graduation, he was one of six physics graduates in the Commonwealth; was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in WWII; he was in active duty from 1937-1946; was in the U.S. Naval Reserves until 1953. He served with various patrol bomber squadrons in Pacific theater, Okinawa, Saipan, Philippines, and other Pacific islands; he was the past Assistant Scout Master for Troop #45.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Roger Herndon; a sister, Mildred Hutchens; and two brothers, Thomas Herndon and Herbert Herndon.

Survivors include his wife of almost 64 years (June 3, 1942); two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Herndon and Dennis Whittaker of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Elizabeth Herndon and Loyren American Horse of Murray; two sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence “Woody” Woodrow, Jr., and Donna Herndon of Murray, and Robert “Bobby” and Jen Herndon of Newburgh, Ind.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Ruby Herndon and Charlie Arnett of Coldwater, and Edythe Herndon of Murray; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Sara Imogene Herndon of Puryear, Tenn., and Eugene “Corky” and Mamie Herndon of Eddyville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
