The Trigg County Wildcat football team played their final exhibition game Friday August 17 against Graves County and found a few missing pieces to their team. However, some pieces are still missing and head coach Shannon Burcham is unsure where a few of them need to go.

“I was disappointed with the offensive line,” said a somewhat concerned Burcham, “the offense is just one block away from being where it needs to be.”

Trigg County’s offense never found a rhythm against Graves and managed only 18 offensive plays in the 24 minutes of regulation. The Cats managed to get only 20 yards of total offense out of the 18 plays they ran. That is only 1.1 yards per play. The offense managed only one first down. That is a hefty step backwards from the last scrimmage where Trigg rushed for 40 yards and threw for over 200.

Trigg’s defense played better football than the previous game, but could not prevent the ever so deadly “big plays”. Graves scored two touchdowns on long downfield throws after Trigg blew its coverage on the wide receivers.

Trigg was shorthanded, though, with Antonio Grubbs, Dustin White, and Matt Wallace sitting out the game, all of which are contributors to the team.

There was much light at the end of the tunnel, however. The final tune-up gave the coaching staff a much better idea of the personnel they would like to put on the field against Hopkinsville.

“We played several people on defense,” said Burcham, “we still have to find guys who are going to fly around and get to the ball. They are starting to figure that out.”

Trigg returns around six starters from last year on both sides of the ball, but senior guard Ben Koenig is the only experienced offensive lineman. The offense has an identity and several leaders both who speak loud both vocally and by their play on the field. Burcham is determined to find a player to do that on defense.
