The Trigg County Fiscal Court voted unanimously to give the Ham Festival $1,500 for lavatory facilities during next month’s 31st annual event, despite the festival committee having $75, 178.41 within its coffers.

County Judge/Executive Stan Humphries said, “In the past, Trigg County has provided funding for insurance, but I believe the City of Cadiz will pay the insurance premium.” He added, “We have other areas where we can help, including portable potties.”

Ham Festival Committee Member and County Treasurer Lucy Oliver said that the money would defray part of the sanitation expenses incurred by the festival, but expected expenses to rise due to a need to provide hand-washing stations. She said that other sources of funding existed for the balance of the festival, and that with the demolition of the County Courthouse, electricity for the festival would be purchased by the city.

Magistrate Doug Taylor made a motion to designate $1,500 for the event. “If the festival needs more, they should not be shy about asking as the need arises.”

After the meeting, Taylor added, “The county has always supported community involvement with the Ham Festival. We believe it brings exposure to the city, county and community as a whole. In the past we provided electricity and restrooms through the courthouse, which is no longer available. We want to provide some funding to continue to promote the event and our community.”

Meeting as both the Fiscal Court, and adjourning briefly to convene as the Trigg County Justice Center Board of Directors, the seven magistrates and County Judge/Executive approved resolutions to issue up to $12.5 million in bonds to finance the new Justice Center.

Sam Conner of J.J.B. Hilliard, financial advisor to the project, said that the Administrative Office of the Courts would pay $914,000 annually to cover debt, and expected sales of the bonds to commence on September 18.
