The Trigg County Fiscal Court agreed to attempt to purchase the former Trigg County School’s Bus Garage at their June 20 session as a potential site for the new Senior Citizens’ Center. In addition, the court also approved contracts for road materials and fuel acquisition, as well as approved three roads to add to the County Road Maintenance Manifest.

County Judge Executive Berlin Moore told the court, “The Senior Center has been looking for property for a new facility for some time. People have offered them this-or-that property for different prices, but we think we might have found something. We have been talking to the school district and asked if they would be interested in selling the old bus garage. The school has declared the property to be surplus, but a state law requires the property to be sold at fair market value, which is $170,000.”

The bus garage is located at 182 Main Street.

Moore’s proposal reminded the school of the use of several county facilities, including the soccer facility near the Lake Barkley State Park and baseball fields at the Trigg County Recreation Complex. “We will ask them to sell the property for half the approximate value $85,000 and consider the other half to be considered trade-in-kind for the use of some county facilities.”

Moore added that a line-item in the state budget awards $200,000 to the Senior Center for a new facility. The money is to be used at the discretion of the Senior Center but managed by the fiscal court.

“This is a facility we inquired to the school board and superintendent about a few years ago. At the time, we did not have sufficient funds to pursue the acquisition as the state grant had not been awarded,” said Senior Center Operations Director Carolyn Bland. “We will have a committee meeting in July to discuss what we want in the new center.”
