“We examined revenues for the county and considered a lot of facts,” said Magistrate Doug Taylor. “In the spring, we raised the insurance premium tax and recognize we have above average new property growth, so it is the committee’s recommendation that we have no rate increase.”
For the county, the 7.9 percent real estate tax generated $482,517 in 2006 and the compensating rate, for greater property values at the same rate will generate $518,054 in 2007. A 7.5 percent hospital tax generated 458,086 in 2006 and is projected for 498,381 this year. The county left personal property, motor vehicle and watercraft taxes at the same amount as the previous fiscal year for both the county and hospital/ambulance tax districts.
Sheriff Randy Clark told the fiscal court that Deputy Thomas Harris has been attending the Kentucky Police Academy in Richmond and has reached week seven in his studies. He added that the course lasts 18 weeks. Clark said that his department completed the preliminary selection process for a new deputy allowed in the county’s 2007 budget. Jimmy Godair, an employ of the City of Cadiz completed physical and psychological testing and would move on to a complete background check and drug screening prior to his hiring as a new deputy.
Clark added that the prospective new deputy had not undergone police training as of yet. “We are really pleased with his background examination and interview so far,” said Clark.
The sheriff reported that his department collected 95.67 percent of the total taxes due to the county in the tax settlement presented in the court. Magistrate Donnie Tyler moved to approve the settlement, while Magistrate Larry Lawrence provided a second. The motion passed without opposition.
Judge/Executive Stan Humphries told the court that along with Magistrate Barry Littlejohn and Senior Center Architect Keith Sharp, he inspected the roof of the County Courthouse annex. “It’s in bad shape,” he said. “We wonder why the leaking was not even worse in some places, and are fortunate it has not leaked, even though we are in a drought. There is no positive news for a pitched roof. With all the steps we need, it could cost between $50,000-$60,000.”
