At Monday night’s Ham Festival Planning Committee meeting, Committee Member Cindy Sholar announced that she had entered into final negotiations with headlining musical act Doug Stone. Following the announcement, Sholar just as quickly requested the announcement not be published in The Cadiz Record.

Despite the announcement at an open public meeting, Sholar said her request was based on a request by officials negotiating the contract. “They asked us not to publicize this, and it could cause them to cancel due to a breach of contract,” Sholar told the Ham Festival Committee.

She then said that the cost of booking Stone totaled $4,000, and added that he charted 12 number one singles. Sholar said that in negotiations with talent representatives, she requested a primarily acoustical act to minimize set-up time on the festival’s one stage this year.

The Cadiz Record’s Advertising Manager Cindy Mitchell, a member of the Committee asked if the announcement would be “heard on WKDZ tomorrow.”

Sholar said, “I have not told WKDZ, and they do not mind keeping things quiet for us.”

According to www.CMT.com, Stone was sentenced to six months in jail in 2005 for failure to pay child support and alimony and faced a fine for contempt of court for failure to provide financial records to a Robertson Co. Tenn. Circuit Court. The same website said that Stone charted only four number one hits on Billboard Magazine’s country chart.

Mitchell asked Sholar why negotiations were taking place in late August before the festival October 12, 13 and 14.

Sholar said that the Festival has always negotiated with acts at this late date to secure the best price for a performance.

“It’s cheaper if you get them late in the game,” agreed Committee Chairperson Thelma Fowler.

Fowler said that with the demolition of the Trigg County Courthouse, food vendors would conduct sales along Marion Street and at the Farmer’s Market. She added that electricity would be available at both locations. “These are the only places for food vendors,” she said.

Current plans call for using the Trigg County Schools’ parking lots as a staging area for vendors. Fowler said that each vendor will be assigned a number and contacted via two-way radio to report to the festival’s downtown site for setup, in an effort to minimize congestion.

Fowler also announced that plans to run a shuttle bus service from outlying parking areas to the festival had been placed on hold. Plans to use busses belonging to Trigg County Schools had been scrubbed due to issues about liability insurance, she said. In earlier meetings, Fowler had stressed the need for festival guests to use the shuttle service. She added that she hoped that Pennyrile Allied Community Services would allow their busses to be used for the event.
