Dr. Armand Joseph Bastin, 84, Huffman Mill Road and Boca Raton, Fla., died at 3:05 a.m. Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, following a brief illness.

Services were held Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. John Thomas officiating.Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery.

A native of Vincennes, Ind., he was born Oct. 24, 1925, the son of the late Armand Julian and Catherine Elizabeth Hess Bastin.

He was an optometrist for 55 years and was owner of Bastin Optometric Clinic.

He was a member of S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, St. Stephen Parish, Cadiz, and St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Boca Raton.

He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran who served with the rank of staff sergeant as a flight engineer and top turret gunner from 1943 until 1945.

He was the recipient of two Presidential Unit Citations with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the French and Greek victory medals.

He was among those instrumental in organizing the Western Kentucky Fair and establishing the fairgrounds, and was a director of Planters Bank and Nations Bank. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Rotary Student Loan Fund, and, as a student at Indiana University, was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

His first wife, Phyllis Mary Bastin, died in 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Glover Bastin; two sons, Dr. Robert J. Bastin, Trigg County, Armand Joseph Bastin Jr., Christian County; two daughters, Bonnie Bastin Haney, Lisa Bastin Smith, both of Christian County; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the SS. Peter and Paul stained glass fund.
