Funeral services for Dr. William F. Smith, Jr., 64, of Madisonville, formerly of Murray, were conducted on Saturday, January 14, 2006, at 2 p.m., at the Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville.

Rev. Brian Morse officiated at the services. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery in Earlington.

Dr. Smith died on Sunday, January 8, 2006, at his residence.

Dr. Smith was born on December 14, 1941, in Hodgenville. He was the son of the late William Freeman and Martha Jane Smith.

Dr. Smith received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from MSU in 1964, and his PhD in Theoretical Physics from UK in 1968. He taught physics and computer science at MSU from 1968 to 1973, and from 1976 to 1989, working at Sperry Rand in Huntsville, Ala., from 1973 to 1976. He worked for Lockheed at the Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, Miss., from 1989 until 2004. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Murray.

In addition to his parents, a son, Russell Warren Moore, and a granddaughter, Kelly Renee Opp, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Lynne Vincent of Bremen; a son, Dr. William Freeman Smith, III, of Madisonville; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Jane Smith and Mary Elizabeth Smith, both of Murray; and two brothers, Sydney Smith and Roy Smith.
