With county and state candidates selected by voters in the May primary, and other potential office seekers looking ahead to the November 7 general election, The Cadiz Record asked Trigg County Clerk Wanda Thomas to discuss the non-partisan races and rules governing the race.

“The deadline to declare a candidacy for city elections, including the Mayor, all city council seats, and school boards District’s 1 and 3 is August 8. It costs $20 to enter any of these races,” said Thomas.

Thomas faxed The Cadiz Record a list of qualifications needed for a candidate to seek a particular office. School board candidates must be at least 24 years of age, a citizen of Kentucky for at least three years preceding the election, a registered voter in the district for which he or she would be elected, completed grade 12, received a GED or a high school diploma in an external diploma program, and file and affidavit attesting to completion of grade 12 or equivalent in a nominating petition. The candidate must not hold a state office requiring a constitutional oath, be a member of the general assembly or hold or discharge the duties of any civil, or political office, deputyship, or agency under the city or county of his residence, nor at the time, of election, is directly or indirectly interested in the sale to the board of services, supplies, or equipment purchased with school funds nor been removed from a board of education for cause, nor has a relative employed by the school district.

Mayoral candidates must be at least 25 years of age, a resident of the city for one tear, a qualified voter in the city, and shall reside in the city throughout his or her term of office.

City council candidates face the same qualifications as the mayor, though the age requirement is 21 years of age.

Thomas said that the books for election registration close October 9, so voters must register their eligibility or a change of address prior to this deadline.

Thomas added that no additional filings would be permitted for offices with political party affiliation, even by independent candidates.
