Mike Wright was officially sworn in as Trigg County’s 1st District magistrate prior to Monday’s meeting of the county fiscal court.

Wright, who was elected to the position two weeks ago, was directed by Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear to fill the unexpired term of his predecessor, Shannon Knight, who stepped down after taking residence out of the county. Knight took the position in April 2009 after previously-elected Doug Taylor accepted government employment that required he leave the fiscal court.

Wright follows in the footsteps of his grandfather Earl Perry, a four-term magistrate, and father Gene Wright, who served five terms as magistrate.

“I’m happy that I get to start right away,” Wright said. “It gives me a month and a half to learn how things are done and get in the flow of things. I’m excited.”

Wright, along with incumbents Barry Littlejohn (District 2), Jon Goodwin (District 3), Larry Lawrence (District 6) and Donnie Tyler (District 7), will be joined in January by magistrate-elects Jeff Broadbent (District 4) and Rick Nelson (District 5).

The agenda for Monday’s meeting was short. After approving the payment of monthly bills, the court discussed October financial statements, which included passing along a $350,000 payment to Trigg County Hospital from recent property tax payments.

The court also approved a quit claim deed on Cumberland Shores, Lot 31.

The parks and recreation committee report included a request that the court vote to retain Eldridge Rogers as director of the Trigg County Recreation Complex. Judge-Executive Stan Humphries said Rogers and other county employees will be officially rehired in January.

Humphries noted that he and members of the court will attend a Kentucky Association of Counties conference this week and that the courthouse will be closed Thursday and Friday of next week for Thanksgiving.
