The Farmers’ Market opens in a parking lot across Main Street from Marion Street, beside the Renaissance Stage. It remains in operation from the first of April through the first of October.
Instead of fresh fruits and vegetables, Fay Fooshee, and her husband Joe sold bedding plants and grasses from their booth. “We have annual bedding plants, perennials, hanging baskets and mixed planters,” she said. “We’ve been selling at the Farmer’s Market ever since it has been here. Usually we have vegetables in the summer and pumpkins and gourds in the fall.”
Local resident Curran Copeland perused the wares at the market on Saturday. “I’m here with my wife and looking for breads. Mostly I want to see what’s here.”
Copeland did not have to go looking far to find a selection of great homemade breads and baked goods. Next to the Fooshee’s stand were Kathy and Lyndell Payton. Kathy said that the opening marked the fourth year she sold her breads at the Farmer’s Market.
“This is the best part of the year for us. In the winter we go to places we’ve been invited to sell our breads. Mainly, that’s to keep our sourdough starter from dying,” she said.
With their famous sourdough bread, the Paytons sold a selection of cakes, cookies, rolls, muffins and flavored butters to spread on their freshly baked goods. The Paytons even sell some of their goods baked without sugar, for calorie and diabetic-conscious shoppers.
“The breads are always our staple,” said Kathy Payton. “It was or original item and still our biggest selling thing.”
