The West Kentucky Workforce Investment Board (WKWIB) has been awarded a $250,00 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor for the purpose of planning and developing regional initiatives within the Purchase Area Development District to enhance economic development and workforce development growth through innovative practices. The planning strategies will improve the ability of the region to overcome declines in traditional industries by promoting growth industries such as energy, advanced manufacturing and healthcare.

The awarded funds will be utilized to accelerate demand driven skills, integrate education and workforce development resources, and enhance the strategic and collaborative network of economic development entities within the eight county Purchase Area Development District. In addition, the Tennessee counties of Henry, Obion and Weakley, as well as Massac County, Illinois will be a part of the overall strategy planning. Sheila Clark, WKWIB Director, emphasized the importance of streamlining plans. “With the current economic climate, regional approach to global competition is vital to the future of economic development and workforce development in west Kentucky,” stated Clark.

The WKWIB recently received a similar award to develop strategic plans for a region comprising the Pennyrile Area Development District. For additional information, please contact the West Kentucky Workforce Investment Board at 1-800-928-7233 or 270-886-9484 or at www.wkwib.org.
