KSP Detective Michelle Kent said that a suspect entered the store at approximately 1:45 pm that afternoon brandishing what she described as a “long gun” and left with an unspecified amount of cash with two other suspects. She reported no injuries in the incident.
Handy Korner co-owner Rick Chidester said that his wife Sharon was working at the time of the robbery. “She’s in being interviewed by detectives now. She’s pretty shook up, but is ok. They got one of the kids that did it up the road, and are looking for more now,” he said at the time of the robbery. “They didn’t get much because we don’t have much money to take.”
Personnel from the Trigg County Sheriff’s Department and Cadiz Police Department assisted in the search for the suspects while Trigg County EMS personnel remained on standby. A U.S. Forestry Service K-9 unit arrived at the scene to help track the suspects.
By Friday morning, the KSP released the names of the three alleged robbery suspects, 18-year old Christopher Dunning, 21-year-old William Simmons and 20-year-old Derrick Fowler, all listed with Cadiz addresses were in custody.
The KSP press release said that the trio was charged with Complicity to Commit Armed Robbery in the First Degree. During their flight from the scene, Simmons suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg. In addition to their apparent involvement in the robbery, the press release said that the three men were under investigation for several recent residential burglaries in Trigg County. All three were lodged in the Christian County Jail.
