Well over 30 soldiers from Fort Campbell spent the weekend at Prizer Point for relaxation and stayed on Monday, although they had to go back on Tuesday, said Bill Stevens, executive director of the Cadiz-Trigg County Tourism Board.

The tourism board co-sponsored a Bringing Opportunities to Single Soldiers (BOSS) activity at the Prizer Point Marina starting at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday, wherein economic and governmental officials from Cadiz and Trigg County got to meet said Fort Campbell soldiers.

There were roughly 20 soldiers present at Prizer Point on Monday, and despite the rain, they were still having a pretty decent time, said Stevens. “This is a great opportunity to create goodwill between Cadiz and Trigg County with the Fort Campbell population,” Stevens added.

Many of the soldiers have experienced Trigg County before, although not all of them, said Stevens, adding that some of the soldiers that were at Prizer Point “just got off the plane” from Iraq or Afghanistan, so this was a rare bit of rest and relaxation (R and R) for them.

Although the water activities were popular with the soldiers during the past weekend, including the pontoon boats, jet skis and water slides, they also enjoyed the nature areas, Stevens said.

According to Daica Gilliam of BOSS, the group organizes activities of this sort about every year to keep up troop morale. Gilliam said a vast majority of the soldiers present had a great time at Prizer Point over the weekend.

Gilliams said she wanted to “get them off the base … give them the sense of a … home away from home.” She added that the rain on Monday “is not going to dampen our spirits at all.”

For at least one soldier, this was not his first foray into Trigg County. Joe Vail, a native of Plainview, Texas, that has been working at Fort Campbell for about four years, said he’s visited Land Between the Lakes twice before, although he also enjoyed himself over the weekend.
