Fred’s customers have raised more than half-million dollars during the company’s annual campaign to collect money to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

This year’s campaign set a new record with a total $ 543, 025, Fred’s officials said today. “Despite the fact the economy remains a challenge for so many, our customers opened their hearts to help save the lives of children,” said Ursula Roman, marketing director for Fred’s. “Surpassing our goal this year, plus breaking the record, demonstrates the generosity and commitment of our customers towards helping their community. It’s really heartwarming.”

This year’s campaign - from March 7 to April 24 - represents a 5 percent increase over last years.

In what has become a Fred’s tradition, shoppers were offered a chance to purchase special paper Miracle Balloons for $1 each at any Fred’s location. All the proceeds from the sale benefited the Children’s Miracle Hospital closest to the Fred’s store where the balloon was purchased.

Since 2006, the first year of the campaign, Fred’s has raised $2.7 million one miracle balloon at a time.

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is a non-profit organization dedicated to generating funds and awareness for children’s hospitals and their programs across the country. The organization assists more than 170 children’s hospitals that provide special care to injured and sick children in communities across the nation.

“It is amazing to see how $1 donations can multiply and help make such a major impact,” Roman said. As an added incentive, customers who purchased a Miracle Balloon in a Fred’s store were rewarded with a Fred’s coupon for $1 off the price of two bags of Hershey’s Candy.

“Because Fred’s stores serve communities across the region, assisting with the health of their children by supporting the hospitals that care for them is a perfect way to become involved,” Roman said. “Fred’s is proud to be a part of a program that benefits children in such a meaningful way. We know our efforts make a difference.

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has grown dramatically since its founding in 1983.
