Saturday night was a night to remember in more than one sense. Not only was the 20th anniversary commemoration of Genesis Express a well-attended and memorable event, but it was also a chance to look back at the years that have made the organization a vital part of the community.

People first lined up for a large spread catered by Perry Radford Catering. After their stomachs were full, Master of Ceremonies Michael Ladd introduced the current Genesis Express members as well as former members and special guests. Among the special guests was former Cadiz Mayor Scott Sivills, who was mayor in 1987 when the organization got off the ground.

Genesis Express member George Radford said he remembered being at basketball games 20 years ago and remarking to his friends that it would be nice to have a few better athletes on the team. Sivills overheard the conversation and suggested that he and a few others get together and try to get something started.

Since that time, Genesis Express has become far more than a place to practice basketball. This was in evidence when Ladd asked Regina Dillard to stand and be recognized. Dillard is the coordinator of Genesis Express’ flagship tutoring program. Alongside her were several wide-smiled children who are regularly tutored there.

Radford thanked members of the Pioneers of Hopkinsville, many of whom were in attendance at the ceremony. Pioneers is a similar civic organization founded by African-Americans and Radford said they were instrumental in helping get Genesis Express started. Radford also thanked H. B. Quinn and the Cadiz Rotary Club for their help in the formation.

Before Genesis Express had a building, they met in many places, Radford said. One frequent meeting place was his coach’s office at the high school. He pointed out that since the beginning, every meeting was started with a prayer.

“When we look back on these 20 years, we came this far by faith,” Radford said proudly.
