On Saturday, members of Genesis Express will meet at the Trigg County Recreation Complex to commemorate 20 years of service to the community.

George Radfor, one of the founding members, said that Genesis was started in 1987 as a service to youth, the elderly and people in need. It had eight original members. Besides Radford, there was Fred Wilson, Jr., Brendel Wilson, Billy Walker, John Ladd, Michael Ladd, Jerry Wilson and Lennus Redd. Radford said they started the group wanted to construct a playground and a basketball court. The mayor of Cadiz at the time was Scott Fivills, and he told the men that he would support them if they showed some initiative in getting the project off the ground, Radford said. By 1991, they had acquired the building on Jefferson Street that became their activity center

Genesis Express now has 14 members. They hold many activities throughout the year and a few fundraisers. They are also known for their tutoring programs. Radford said that Genesis’ service work depends on needs found in the community. He said they do everything from helping people move and replace roofs to securing firewood to those who need it. Radford said the group also awarded three $250 college scholarships last year.

Radford said it was remarkable that the organization had survived and has lasted two decades.

“It could have just been a flash in the pan, but it didn’t turn out that way,” he said.

The anniversary banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 20. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from any Genesis Express member. Radford said that people can eat and socialize until about 8, when the program will begin. There will be recognition of the many people who helped Genesis over the years and a PowerPoint presentation. Five former members who have moved out of Trigg County were invited, Radford said.
