Patrons of Rip’s Bar in Gracey held a fish fry and benefit for friend and popular Rip’s customer Sherene Harper, of Cadiz, on January 13. Harper, a U.S. Army veteran, has been diagnosed with lung cancer and is undergoing treatment at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Marion, Ill.

Harper said that her cancer has spread to her brain and though the VA covers the cost of her treatment, still faces expenses for transportation and lodging. She also has two sons she wants to provide for, Brandon, a student at Murray State University and Trevor, a tenth-grader who earned a spot on the National Honor Roll.

A 20-year resident of Trigg County, Harper said that she operated the Handy Corner store in Rockcastle, but is now on disability.

“(The fish-fry) is wonderful,” said Harper. “This is like my family here at my old stomping ground. I just came to see everyone that I know here.”

Rip’s owner Joey Allen said, “I want to say that I am always amazed by this community- not just Gracey or Cadiz or Cerulean. Everyone steps up to the plate.”

Rip’s bartender Tiffany Turner praised the customers in the crowded front room of the bar on Tobacco Road. “It helps us out here, but it really helps the Harper family most of all to have this benefit. I’ve spoken to her and she will not give up. She’s got a strong will and is a good person who is dedicated to fighting her battle.”
