By a tally of 1,999 votes to 1,683, Democratic Candidate James Hughes defeated his Republican challenger and Interim Jailer Roger Knight. County Clerk Wanda Thomas did not have a final total for Write-in Candidate Mike Calhoun, but said that the total would probably be “less than 50.”

Hughes attributed his successful campaign to his door-to-door effort. “I think it came down to meeting the people person-to-person.”

As Hughes won election during the jailer’s unexpired term, he may assume office when ready. “I talked to judge/Executive Stan Humphries about it. I can start now, or wait until January. I’ll talk to him and the interim jailer about what they think would be best,” said Hughes.

Asked if he would make any changes upon the assumption of office, Hughes said, “I’ll have to get in before seeing what needs to be done. Right now, the only change is to see that a camera is installed in the transport van. I’ve talked with the judge and some of the magistrates, and we all agree that the camera would be a good idea.”

Upon his loss, Knight said, “I think the people of Trigg County made their decision about whom they wanted as jailer. James campaigned hard, and I am not a politician, and didn’t campaign like he did. My love is for law enforcement, and I will help the county out any way I can.”

The jailer of Trigg County is charged with transporting prisoners to and from detention in Christian County.
