Not only a popular elected official in the city, Ricks was the owner of Jim’s Music in downtown Cadiz. The music shop was well known in several states and on Saturday’s Ricks open the store to musicians who traveled for miles for day-long jam sessions.
Citizens and visitors jammed the store for a standing room only crowd.
He also owned Quality Security and was former owner and founder of Lakeland Jamboree, which he sold several years go.
Ricks loved gospel music and hosted a radio show, Jim’s Bluegrass Gospel Show, on a local radio station, WKDZ, for many years.
In June of 2006 a benefit was held for Ricks in downtown Cadiz, but he insisted the funds from the event be contributed to the Relay For Life. “I have plenty of health insurance and qualify for Medicare. I really appreciate it, but really don’t need a benefit for me, so I asked them to give the proceeds to the Trigg County Relay For Life, so that everyone is helped. Whether we bring in $100 or $10,000, it will all go to the Relay,” said Ricks at the time.
Reverend Kevin Roberts and Rev. Jason Strickland officiated at the service. Music was furnished by Doug Brewer, Harrison Sholar, Loy Sholar, Franklin Allen and Ann Collins.
He is survived by his wife, Loucretia (Pope) Ricks, a daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Michael Fitzsimmons of Cadiz; a brother and sister-in-law, Claudie Earl “Bud” and Martha Ricks of Somerset; a sister and brother—in-law, Barbara Jean and Norris Futtrell; an uncle, Delbert Stagner; nephews Tony Ricks, Alan Ricks, Stacy Futrell and niece Mitzi McNichols.
