Graveside services for John Payton Sumner, 90, of Hopkinsville will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Green Hill Memorial Gardens. Chaplain Samuel E. Beeny Sr. will be officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Memorial Gardens.

Sumner died Sunday, November 29, 2009 at 9:10 a.m. at the Western Kentucky Veterans Center of natural causes.

He was born April 25, 1919 in Trigg County to Garland J. and Daisy Ethel Sumner. Sumner was retired from the US Army having served in WWII and the Korean War. He was also retired from Johnson Controls in Cadiz.

Sumner was preceded in death by his father, Garland J. Sumner, his mother, Daisy Ethel Sumner, one stepdaughter, Phyllis Dunning, one brother, Amos Sumner, two sisters, Edna Hamilton and Cleo Meator and one granddaughter, Tonya Zinn.

Survivors include one stepson, Jim Dunning of Pensacola, Fla., two stepdaughters, Barbara Zinn of Ellenwood, Ga., and Teresa Levesque of Las Vegas, Nev., one sister, Christian P’Pool of Hopkinsville, four grandchildren, Steven Zinn, Tamara Page, Angela Richards and Joyce Cribb and four great grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Western Kentucky Veteran Center, Activities Fund at 926 Veterans Drive, Hanson, KY 42413.
