After 34 years working in the Trigg County school system, Mary Ann Lander put in her last day at the Board of Education Friday. Two days before that, employees from the four schools shuffled in and out of the office all day to wish her the best.

“You’re a special lady,” first grade teacher Kim Cravens said to her at her open house reception.

“Well, I don’t know about that, but I’m having a ball eating cake and seeing friends,” Lander said. “I love what I do. And I’ve loved every realm of it. It’s a challenge.”

Lander said she had been touched by how many people had come across the street to see her on their breaks last Wednesday, which also happened to be her birthday. In the morning, the Trigg Tots came and sang “Happy Birthday” to her, and the flow remained steady for the rest of the day, she said.
